Wisconsin crops look very good

Wisconsin crops 2015

It was a great week to make hay in Wisconsin last week; the weekly Crop Progress Report from the National Ag Statistics Service shows six days suitable for field work last week. The sunshine and heat were perfectly-timed for pollination in both corn and soybeans. Topsoil moisture is still in very good shape with 9 percent surplus and 72 percent adequate although 19 percent has slipped into the short and very short categories. Most reporters say they could use some rain.

The Wisconsin corn crop is 59 percent silked with 82 percent rated good to excellent condition. The soybeans are 84 percent good to excellent with 67 percent blooming and 28 percent setting pods. All ahead of the five year average.

The combines are starting to roll in the small grains, 86 percent of the oats have turned and 12 percent are harvested. 98 percent of the winter wheat has turned and 22 percent is harvested. The oats is 83 percent and the wheat 81 percent good to excellent condition.  There was some lodging from the storms of the previous week.

Alfalfa second-crop is 91 percent made and third crop is 20 percent harvested. There are a few reports of some insect pressure but everything seems to be below threshold level.

Six percent of the Wisconsin potatoes have been harvested, the crop is rated 91 percent good to excellent condition.
