Good soil moisture around South Dakota

Rainfall around South Dakota varied last week and even with strong winds and small hail in some areas, on average, farmers had nearly six days available for fieldwork. 66% of topsoil and 68% of subsoil have adequate moisture levels.

71% of corn is silking, compared to the five year average of 56%, and 75% of the crop is in good to excellent condition.

72% of soybeans are blooming, a bit slower than normal, and 29% are at the pod setting stage, slightly faster than usual. 76% of soybeans are rated good to excellent.

96% of the winter wheat crop has changed color, 84% is mature, and 43% has been harvested, with 34% of the crop called good to excellent.

98% of spring wheat has headed and 85% has changed color, with harvest just underway at 2%. 57% of spring wheat is in good to excellent shape.

The first cutting of alfalfa is at 96% and the second cutting is at 45%, with 66% rated good to excellent.

64% of pastures and rangelands are in good to excellent condition and 74% of the state has adequate stock water.
