A cool-down ahead for the Corn Belt

Early in the week, heavy precipitation will provide drought relief on the northern High Plains, where an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain could fall near the Canadian border. Later, showers and a few strong thunderstorms will shift across the Midwest and into the Southeast, resulting in storm totals of 1 to 2 inches in some locations. Heavier rain will fall, however, in Florida, where 5-day totals could locally reach 2 to 5 inches. Elsewhere, mostly dry weather will persist through week’s end in the Pacific Northwest and the south-central U.S., but monsoon-related showers will stretch from the Desert Southwest to the central Plains. Triple-digit heat will persist for much of the week in the south-central U.S. and return to parts of the Northwest.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for near- to above-normal temperatures nationwide, except for the likelihood of cooler-than-normal conditions in the Midwest. Meanwhile, near- to below-normal rainfall across the majority of the U.S. will contrast with wetter-than-normal weather in portions of the Atlantic Coast States, as well as the Great Basin and Desert Southwest.
