Wetter weather to return to parts of the Heartland

Heat will intensify through the weekend on the Great Plains and in the Southeast, increasing stress on summer crops and livestock. Daytime highs are expected to approach or exceed 100° through the weekend on the central and southern Plains, with highs well into the 90s° from the Delta to the southern Atlantic Coast. Rainfall will gradually spread eastward from the western Corn Belt toward the Ohio Valley, with 3-day rainfall expected to approach 2 inches in the vicinity of southern Iowa. In the West, monsoon showers are diminishing in the Four-Corners Region, but rain will gradually return to the Northwest.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for near- to above-normal temperatures over most of the Nation, with the highest probability of warmer-than-normal weather in California and Texas. Wet weather is forecast for much of the Midwest and South, in particular the middle and lower Mississippi Valley and the Southeast. Monsoon showers will likely be confined to southern Arizona. Drier-than-normal weather is expected in a large section of the Northwest, New England, and southern sections of Texas and Florida.
