North Carolina wants to know where all the chickens are

North Carolina

North Carolina is requiring all chicken-owners to register their birds with the state. Even backyard poultry owners must register so if there is an infection, the State Department of Agriculture can quickly notify anyone with chickens in the area. Those with 200-or-more birds must also submit a plan of action should an infection occur.  An online registration will be available starting August 1st.

As an additional preventative measure, all poultry shows and public live bird sales will be suspended from August 15th through January 15th in North Carolina.

No avian influenza has been found in the state so far but many are concerned the risk will increase significantly as birds migrate this fall.

North Carolina is the number-3 in the nation in broiler and turkey production.
