Classic July weather pattern across the Heartland

Increasingly hot conditions will develop east of the Rockies, with 100-degree heat likely over the central and southern Plains during the next 5 days. Readings in the upper 90s, approaching 100°, are also expected across the Gulf Coast States. Despite the widespread above-normal temperatures, showers and thunderstorms will ease the heat somewhat in the Midwest, with highs generally remaining below 90° across the Corn Belt. In addition, locally heavy showers will prevail in the Southeast, with 5-day totals in excess of 3 inches possible in Florida. Out West, monsoon showers will prevail in southern and eastern portions of the Four Corners, while below-normal temperatures prevail across the rest of the region.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook for calls for above-normal temperatures over most of the nation, with cooler-than-normal conditions confined to the central and northern Rockies. Meanwhile, near- to below-normal rainfall across the Northeast, Texas, and majority of the West will contrast with wetter-than-normal weather in the Southeast, Delta, and western Corn Belt.
