Segregate wheat during harvest

Wheat harvest is behind and quality is poor in many parts of Michigan. DuPont Pioneer Account Manager Chris Creguer says farmers should have a proactive conversation with their local elevator and crop insurance agent to plan on dealing with quality issues.

“Unfortunately, while we’ve seen some very good yields for the most part, the frequent rains in some areas have led to issues with vomitoxin and/or falling numbers in certain wheat fields in certain parts of the state.”

The latest crop progress report says Michigan’s wheat harvest is 50 percent behind average.

DuPont Pioneer Account Manager Kurt Marvel says it’s best to pre-scout fields before harvest.

“Take time to look at the fields, check the perimeters, especially around woods and low-lying areas to see how bad the vomitoxin levels appear to be from the amount of head scab.”

Marvel recommends harvesting separately until testing can be done on wheat quality. He tells Brownfield, drying wheat down as quickly as possible can help to eliminate potential quality degradation. Marvel also says increasing fan speeds on combines can help blow off some of the lighter infected wheat.
