China’s beef appetite grows; U.S. remains on sideline
China’s appetite for beef continues to grow.
Just four years ago, China’s beef imports totaled only 112 million dollars for an entire calendar year. Through May of this year, imports exceeded 700 million dollars – up 17 percent from the record pace of 2014.
Unfortunately, the U.S. beef industry has not benefited from that growth. China has not bought U.S. beef since the 2003 BSE case. Its primary suppliers of beef are Australia, Uruguay, New Zealand and Argentina.
At the recent Cattle Industry Summer Conference in Denver, we discussed the Chinese situation with Phil Seng, president and CEO of the U.S. Meat Export Federation.
