No complaints this summer in the Nebraska Sandhills
It’s been a good summer in Nebraska range country.
Barb Cooksley and her husband George ranch near Anselmo in the Nebraska Sandhills.
“We’re putting up prairie hay right now and it’s a good crop,” Cooksley says. “In June, we had close to seven inches of rain and it came just as nice as we could ask for. So we’re very thankful.”
Cooksley says they are working to rebuild their cow herd.
“We’re still trying to recover from the droughts in the early 2000’s, and then we got hit hard again in 2012, so we’re still not at full capacity,” she says. “But it’s always fun to look at new genetics or just hold back some more heifers for the next time. And if a good old cow that’s been bringing you in a calf, if you can get one more year out of her, that’s great too.
“It’s been a great couple of years to be a cow-calf producer.”
