Working to preserve technology
Christine Brunel–Ligneau, Head of Integrated Weed Management at Bayer CropScience says Bayer’s Respect the Rotation program is an effort to have a conversation about the importance of integrated weed management. “We want to create a stewardship program and have farmers set up the right practices to fight weed resistance,” she says.
Ligneau tells Brownfield farmers around the world are battling weeds. “Weeds are eating roughly 30 percent of the yield when nothing is done to control them,” she says.
And the issue of weed resistance isn’t just in the United States. She says it is growing globally. “We need to convince the farmer to protect their productivity,” she says. “And that’s part of the reason why we decided to set up this global initiative.”
Ligneau says by rotating crops, rotating herbicide-tolerant traits, and rotating modes of action farmers can help preserve the technologies available to them.
