Rains return to parts of the Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, a large convective complex was producing heavy rain in Iowa and parts of neighboring states. The rain is falling mainly northwest of the wettest Midwestern areas, which stretch from Missouri to Ohio.

On the Plains, showers are mostly confined to North Dakota. Cool conditions in Montana contrast with hot weather on the central and southern High Plains. In western and central Kansas and environs, recently ended showers aided summer crops that have been stressed by hot, dry conditions.

In the South, hot, dry weather in the Mississippi Delta and environs is boosting irrigation demands and increasing stress on pastures and rain-fed crops. Meanwhile, showers linger across parts of Florida.

In the West, shower activity has temporarily abated. However, temperatures remain at mostly near- or below-normal levels. Despite recent showers, subsoil moisture remains mostly very short to short in several states, including California (90%), Oregon (75%), Washington (64%), and Nevada (60%).
