More than 98 percent of farmers make conservation compliance

The USDA says more than 98 percent of producers have met the requirement to certify conservation compliance and will qualify for crop insurance subsidies.

U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says it an overwhelming response.

The USDA says the number of those not in compliance may be smaller than the figures indicate.  Among the producers who have not certified, USDA records suggest the majority are no longer farming or may have made errors in filing. The Farm Service Agency is reaching out to producers who haven’t filed the form to try to help them comply.

The 2014 Farm Bill provisions for conservation compliance are expected to extend conservation provisions for millions of acres of highly erodible land and wetlands.
