Behind the Scenes

Brownfield on the run

Heslip running

Have you been to a race event lately?  Not the Nascar, dirt bike or speedway kind, the running kind.  The agricultural industry is meeting the health conscious consumer where they are, on the ground running.  The Beef Checkoff has Team Beef who are Powered Up by Protein. The Dairy Checkoff is refueling with chocolate milk.  Even cherries are finding themselves as a super fruit for muscle recovery.

While I’ve seen pictures in my social media threads, I had yet to embark on any type of event that required a race number.  Until this summer.  Having the opportunity to be part of the Case IH Farms and Legs team for a Ragnar Relay Series, it was time to get moving.  A lot.

A Ragnar race is a 200 mile relay race with a team of 12.  The Northwest Passage race our team of ag media professionals is running starts near the Canadian board and travels south along the coast of Washington.  Thankfully, I have been assigned with the shortest legs of the race and in total, will run about a half marathon in 36 hours.  By the end, I might be crawling, but my goal is to run the entire distance.

Starting out training I was only a few steps ahead of a Couch to 5K program and, at times, have had to dig deep to pound more pavement.  This past June I ran my first 10K, 6.2 miles.  It was the first time I ever ran that far and ran the entire time!  I’m still terrified of what next week may bring, but the idea of running along the Pacific coastline has me motivated.

Stay tuned as Brownfield reports from the west on the run.
