Better management practices improve water quality

DRussellRCPP

The new Tri-State Regional Conservation Program in the Western Lake Erie Basin will help farmers improve water quality.  Steve Shine with the Michigan Department of Agriculture says Michigan’s environmental assurance program walks farmers though identifying risk areas.

“By identifying those gaps or weaknesses, we can put in place or recommend to the producer practices that will address those management issues and make them low risk for the environment.”

He tells Brownfield nutrient management and soil erosion are just a few of the practices that the program will focus on.

Shine says farmers making changes can become environmental verified with the department.  “We confirm that they’ve attended to all the issues that might make them vulnerable for environmental pollution or environmental issues and then we get them verified, and they will maintain that status.”

Practices are intended to reduce nitrogen and sediment runoff.
