Cherry harvest just beginning

The nation’s largest tart cherry producer will see slightly lower production numbers in 2015.

Phil Korson, President of the Cherry Marketing Institute, says a lot of production in Northwest Michigan was damaged in a May freeze.

“Today Michigan produces 75 percent of the U.S. supply of tart cherries and almost half of that production is in that northern corner of the state of Michigan.”

Korson tells Brownfield harvest is beginning in southwest Michigan, right on schedule.  He says harvest will move north throughout the month.

“Our markets are good.”  He tells Brownfield, “We have 235 million pounds in sales last year, our crop forecast for this year from USDA is 222 million pounds.”

He says inventory being carried forward will help support any lost production from this year.  Korson says the weather can still impact crop quality during harvest.
