Knee high by the 4th

SWMIcornJuly4

Head, shoulders, knees and toes, Michigan’s corn crop hits them all.  Jim Zook, Executive Director of Michigan Corn, says crop progress is variable.

“We actually have some corn that is shoulder higher, we’ve actually got some corn that I’ve seen today that is only ankle high, so it is all across the broad.”

Zook tells Brownfield, he expects areas that received an abundance of rain will have nitrogen deficiencies.

He says Michigan’s growing degree days are a little ahead of last year.  “This year because we were able to get the corn planted earlier, we were able to take full advantage of those growing degree days for the month of May, or at least the majority of it.”

Zook tells Brownfield, he thinks Michigan farmers overall are on track for an above average crop year.
