The National Cherry Festival kicks off over the 4th of July weekend in the nation’s largest producing region, Traverse City, Michigan.

President of the Cherry Marketing Institute Phil Korson says it’s a time to tell the cherry industry’s story.  He says visitors can hop on a bus for the Cherry Connection and tour the Northwest Michigan Horticulture Research Farm.  “It’s an opportunity for us to teach about agriculture and pollination, all the different things we do within the production cycle.”

Korson tells Brownfield on industry day, July 7, they will recognize the Cherry Industry Person of the Year, Dr. Jim Flore with Michigan State University.  “We’re recognizing him for all of his outstanding contributions on the research side and all his work he’s done throughout his career on cherries.”

Korson says the Traverse City region has the capacity to produce 200 million pounds of tart cherries.  Michigan is the largest producer of tart cherries and fourth largest producer of sweet cherries.
