Heavy rains on the move

During the next several days, the focus for heavy rain will shift into areas from the mid-South to the southern Mid-Atlantic States. Five-day rainfall totals could reach 2 to 5 inches or more from Arkansas and southern Missouri eastward into parts of North Carolina and Virginia. In contrast, cool but favorably dry weather will overspread much of the eastern Corn Belt. Across the northern and central Plains and upper Midwest, scattered showers will total mostly an inch or less. Generally dry weather will cover the southern Plains, accompanied during the weekend by building heat. In the West, isolated monsoon showers across the southern half of the region will contrast with ongoing heat and dryness in much of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of warmer-than-normal weather in the West and lower Southeast, while near- to below-normal temperatures can be expected across the Plains, Midwest, and Northeast. Meanwhile, drier-than-normal conditions along and near the Gulf Coast and from the Pacific Northwest to the Dakotas will contrast with near- to above-normal rainfall across the remainder of the U.S.
