The USDA has raised its 2015 acreage projection for soybeans and lowered its corn estimate.

The USDA sees soybean planted area at a record 85.139 million acres, up slightly from March’s guess of 84.635 million and 2% higher than 2014’s total of 83.701 million acres, with record high acreage in Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Harvested area for soybeans is seen at 84.449 million acres, compared to 83.601 million a year ago. 94% of this year’s acreage is expected to be herbicide resistant varieties, unchanged from last year.

Corn is pegged at 88.897 million acres, a little bit less than the March estimate of 89.199 million and 2% lower than last year’s total of 90.597 million acres. If realized, the 2015 total would be the smallest U.S. corn planted area since 2010. Harvested area is seen at 81.101 million acres, compared to 83.136 million in 2014.

All wheat acreage is projected at 56.079 million acres, compared to 56.822 million last year. Harvested area for all types is expected to be 48.454 million acres, compared to 46.381 million in 2014 Winter wheat acreage is estimated at 40.620 million acres, a decline of 1% from the last guess and 4% below the year ago total of 42.399 million, with harvested area at 33.329 million acres, compared to 32.304 million last year. Spring wheat is pegged at 13.505 million acres, compared to 13.025 million in 2014, with harvested area at 13.217 million acres, compared to 12.740 million a year ago. Durum acreage is projected at 1.954 million acres, compared to 1.398 million last year, with harvested area of 1.908 million acres, compared to 1.337 million in 2014.

For principal crops, 2015 U.S. planted area is estimated at 325.669 million acres, compared to 326.784 million in 2014.

However, the numbers are subject to change. Much of the Midwest experienced very heavy rainfall and other inclement weather during June, delaying soybean planting in a number of key growing areas.
