Is sidedressing still an option?

There are still decisions being made when it comes to the corn crop.

Joe Nester of Nester Ag at Bryan, Ohio says one of the big decisions is whether or not it makes sense to still apply nitrogen. If a farmer decides to go ahead and apply nitrogen, Nester says the question then becomes, how much to apply.

“And I’m gonna say probably not very much if you sidedress, because we’re not talking a very long time period here, we’re talking 30-45 days of nitrogen need, so we can really cut those rates back,” Nester said. “But, I’ve seen some fields that I would have to say that we’re probably wasting our money on sidedressing because I’m wondering if it’s even gonna ear.”

The Certified Crop Advisor says the other challenge right now is even having an opportunity to take soil tests to see what nutrients are available.
