Greek yogurt offered in school lunches

Chobani

New York-based Chobani has been selected to be the main supplier of yogurt for the National School Lunch program.

From September through November of 2013, USDA offered Greek yogurt as an alternative protein source in schools in Arizona, Idaho, New York and Tennessee.  The success of the pilot prompted USDA to expand the offerings to schools in California, Connecticut, Iowa, Missouri, North Carolina and Washington from September 2014 through June of 2015.

Last April USDA decided to offer Greek yogurt to all states, so far the ten pilot states are “in”.   USDA asked for bids for 170,000 pound of high-protein, low-fat yogurt for August and September: Chobani will provide nearly 116,000 pounds, another New York company, Upstate Niagara will supply 47,000 pounds and Vermont’s Commonwealth Dairy will chip-in 7,000 pounds.
