Rains again re-developing in parts of the Midwest

Across the Corn Belt, conditions remain mostly favorable for summer crop development, despite pockets of excessive wetness in the southern and eastern Corn Belt. Currently, showers and thunderstorms are returning to an area stretching from eastern Nebraska into parts of northern and central Illinois. On June 21, topsoil moisture was rated at least half surplus in Missouri (64%), Indiana (61%), Ohio (57%), and Illinois (56%).

On the Plains, showers and thunderstorms are returning to the northern half of the region, where conditions remain mostly favorable for summer crops. Favorably dry weather prevails on the southern Plains.

In the South, scattered showers and thunderstorms are providing local relief from an extended period of hot, mostly dry conditions. However, hot weather persists, despite the showers. Today’s high temperatures are expected to exceed 95° in many areas from the Mississippi Delta to Georgia and South Carolina.

In the West, heat continues to intensify, except along the immediate Pacific Coast. The hot, dry conditions are promoting crop development but boosting irrigation demands and stressing dryland crops.
