Concerns about yields already arising

A Purdue ag economist says markets throughout the world last winter were confident a grain shortage would not be an issue in 2015.

But, Chris Hurt says Mother Nature may have other ideas.  “We do have some difficulties,” he says.  “The Eastern Corn Belt clearly has water difficulties and the two-week out forecast continues to look very wet for the Missouri through the Ohio area.  We still could have a lot of dynamics from Mother Nature jeopardizing some of this yield.”

Hurt says the crop issues aren’t localized to any one area and there are a lot of weather vulnerabilities with this year’s crop.  “And that gives us the sense that maybe the world has been a little too comfortable in terms of thinking there is plenty of food out there, we’ve filled the bins, and we don’t have to worry about yields,” he says.

He says the summer isn’t over yet – and it will be imperative for farmers to protect themselves from the uncontrolled variables in the market.
