The H5N2 factor
The impact of avian influenza clearly evident in the latest Chicken and Eggs report from USDA. U.S. egg production totaled 8 billion in May down 5 percent from a year ago. There were 342 million laying hens in the country also down 5 percent from May of last year.
Hens producing table or market eggs were down 8 percent at 271 million. Table egg production was 6.8 billion down 4 percent from April and down 7 percent from a year ago. Egg production per 100 hens was unchanged at 75 per day.
The industry is moving to rebuild, egg-type chicks hatched during May were down 3 percent from a year ago but eggs in incubators as of June 1st were up 11 percent. Placements of egg-type pullets for future hatchery flocks were up 5 percent.
From April to May of this year; Iowa lost 12 million laying hens and Minnesota lost 3 million.
Broiler-type chicks hatched during May totaled 809 million up 3 percent from a year ago. Broiler eggs in incubators were 2percent above a year ago at 657 million.
