Senate advances TPA to final vote

capitol-d.c.By a vote of 60 to 37, Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) cleared a procedural hurdle in the Senate Tuesday morning and is headed for a final vote on Wednesday.

If TPA passes Wednesday, as is expected, it will set the stage for a Thursday vote on Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA).  The House approved TPA as a standalone bill last week and is waiting on the Senate to act on TAA.

In debate leading up to the vote, Oregon Democratic Senator Ron Wyden argued for passage of TPA.

“If you believe that other countries should open their markets to American exports, like the U.S. is open to theirs, this is our chance to break down the tariffs and other barriers,” Wyden said.

But following today’s vote, Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown argued that trade agreements are bad for the nation’s workers.

“How shameful,” Brown said. “We’re making this decision knowing that people will lose their jobs because of our action.”
