A change in weather across parts of the Heartland
During the next 5 days, a pair of cold fronts crossing the northern half of the U.S. will generate widespread showers and locally severe thunderstorms in the northern Plains, Midwest, and Northeast. Rainfall totals could reach 2 to 4 inches in the Midwest and 1 to 2 inches across the northern Plains and the Northeast. In contrast, mostly dry weather will prevail in the south-central U.S. and much of the West. Most of the West will also experience very hot weather, while above-normal temperatures will also cover much of the South. At times, heat will extend as far north as the Mid-Atlantic States.
Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for above-normal temperatures in the Southeast, northern High Plains, and much of the West, while cooler-than-normal conditions will stretch from southern sections of the Rockies and Plains into the Northeast. Meanwhile, below-normal rainfall in southern Florida and from the Pacific Northwest into the upper Midwest will contrast with wetter-than-normal weather across most of the southern and eastern U.S.
