GMA says Vermont labeling law cost-prohibitive

Vermont GMO

The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) says the cost of complying with Vermont’s new GMO food labeling law could be more than food companies make on a product.  GMA has filed suit against the Vermont law.  In a letter to Governor Peter Shumlin, the association charges the state has repeatedly failed to respond to numerous efforts to seek clarification in the implementation of the law.  GMA says the costs to change labels and supply chain systems along with the threat of $1,000-a-day fines for mislabeling a product could easily exceed the revenue a company makes on a product.

GMA says the enormous costs, complexities and challenges created by state labeling laws shows the critical need for Congress to pass a uniform federal standard.  A bill to create a national standard is currently in a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee.
