Cool, wet weather could damage corn crop

With 95 percent of the state’s corn crop planted – there is some concern about how the cool, wet weather Indiana has been experiencing is affecting the crop.

Brent Minett, technical sales agronomist for Beck’s Hybrids says for the crop that has already emerged the weather is causing more cosmetic damage.

But, there could be problems for the crop that hasn’t emerged.  “Some of the heavy rains and cooler weather have crusted the soils over,” he says.  “In some cases corn will be able to push through that crust and in others – especially your tougher clays in northeast Indiana and eastern Indiana there may be challenges and we may have some stand loss.”

He says farmers will need to scout their fields once the weather clears.
