Helping Lake Erie recover, quicker

Gail Hogan_Food Dialogues - Toledo, moderator, Sandy Bihn, Lake Erie WaterkeeperThe Executive Director of Lake Erie Waterkeeper, Inc. says she believes agriculture is trying to help resolve the harmful algae bloom issue in Lake Erie, but Sandy Bihn tells Brownfield there needs to be a better plan that measures results.

“An annual report card, to see actual reductions, when you give out money, how many pounds of phosphorus, or nitrogen, or sediment, whatever you’re targeting is actually getting reduced,” Bihn said. “We’re missing an opportunity to successfully engage those dollars to produce results to get the lake healthier, quicker.”

Bihn says it shouldn’t take 20 or 30 years if more is understood about the causes to the Lakes problems.
