Highway funding bill extended

SemiHaulingGrainThe Soy Transportation Coalition (STC) says the highway funding extension passed by the U.S. House and Senate is better than the alternative.

Mike Steenhoek, Executive Director of the Soy Transportation Coalition (STC) says while the two month extension of the highway funding bill is expected to be enough to get through the busy summer road and bridge construction season, no one should be celebrating or toasting Congress.

“What really is necessary is to come up with a plan and a strategy for not only what we are going to do, how we’re going to invest in our surface transportation system, but most importantly how you’re going to pay for it,” said Steenhoek. “Thus far Congress has failed to provide that leadership to delve into some very difficult, controversial topics, and we really need them to step up to the plate and do that.”

Steenhoek says when it comes to surface transportation, predictability of funding is nearly as important as the amount of funding.

President Obama is expected to sign the extension before the May 31st deadline.
