April poultry production up 4% on year

The USDA reports domestic poultry production during April 2015 was up 4% from April 2015. Production totaled 3.897 billion pounds, with chicken making up most of that at 3.388 billion pounds. Turkey totaled 496.341 million pounds.

The preliminary live weight of all inspected birds was 5.140 billion pounds, also 4% more than a year ago.

Young chickens averaged 6.12 pounds per bird, all chickens averaged 6.11 pounds, and turkeys averaged 30.7 pounds.

Ante-mortem condemnations were 11.647 million pounds, 0.23% of the preliminary live weight. Post-mortem condemnations were 41.588 million pounds, 1.06% total monthly production.

For 2015 to date, U.S. poultry production is 15.204 billion pounds, 2% more than this time last year.
