Wide-ranging weather across the Heartland

Across the Corn Belt, Frost Advisories or Freeze Warnings were in effect in many areas from North Dakota to Michigan. However, Wednesday morning’s freeze was limited to northernmost corn and soybean production areas, where little, if any, summer crop emergence has occurred. Very cool weather is slowing crop development throughout the Midwest, while a chilly rain is overspreading the southwestern Corn Belt.

On the Plains, chilly but dry weather covers Montana and North Dakota. Meanwhile, showers and thunderstorms continue to pummel portions of the central and southern Plains, where May rainfall totals are approaching record levels in some locations. Ongoing rainfall is also hampering fieldwork and threatening the quality of winter wheat. In addition, flash flooding remains a threat, particularly across the southeastern Plains.

In the South, generally dry weather continues to promote fieldwork in most areas east of the Mississippi River. However, locally heavy showers and thunderstorms are returning to the mid-South. Pockets of lowland flooding persist from the western Gulf Coast region into Arkansas.

In the West, cool, showery weather extends from northern California and southern Oregon to the northern Intermountain West. Except in the Pacific Northwest, where warm, dry conditions persist, the sustained period of cool, occasionally damp Western weather is reducing irrigation demands and boosting topsoil moisture.
