NCBA supports COOL’s repeal

meatcaseThe National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) supports legislation to repeal Country of Origin Labeling (COOL).

Wyoming cattleman and NCBA president Philip Ellis says Congress needs to act quickly to prevent trade retaliation by Canada and Mexico.

“We think this is an easy way to solve this problem before it disrupts our cattle market and dollars in our producers’ pockets,” Ellis says. “There is no fix left for COOL.  We’ve tried to do that and it needs repeal now.”

Ellis says COOL has resulted in discounts paid to U.S. producers and is directly related to the closure of a number of processing plants and feedlots in the U.S. And he says economic studies have shown that consumers do not use COOL information in their purchasing decisions.
