CDC: Foodborne illness down AND up
Fewer foodborne illnesses were reported in 2014 from certain pathogens, according to a survey by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (C-D-C), but went up from other pathogens.
The agency says rates of infection from a serious form of E. coli and a more common Salmonella bacteria decreased last year from the period of 2006 through 2008. For example, E. coli 0157 cases were down 32% from that period.
CDC’s ongoing surveillance system, FoodNet, tracks nine common foodborne pathogens in 10 states.
The system found less common cases of salmonella infection increased in 2014 – and so did illnesses from several other pathogens including Campylobacter.
Most of the 19-thousand infections reported by FoodNet were from Salmonella and Campylobacter.
