Spring planting isn’t progressing everywhere
Optimal weather in parts of the state has Indiana’s corn planting ahead of the five-year average.
But, for Elaine Gillis, who farms in Delaware, Blackford, and Jay counties (East Central Indiana) that isn’t the case. “Our farm is less than 5 percent planted corn acres and 0 percent planted soybean acres,” she says. “In the area – farmers are in the 10 to 15 percent planted on corn acres.”
She tells Brownfield they are trying to remain optimistic. “I hate to admit it, because I don’t want to jinx us – but some of our better corn years have been when we’ve planted in early June,” she says. “However, it isn’t necessarily ideal for labor and getting the rest of the applications done.”
Gillis says they received another untimely rain last evening which will likely keep them out of the field for at least another 3 to 5 days.
