This year’s Princess Kay of the Milky Way finalists have been announced.

Sherry Newell of the Midwest Dairy Association calls Minnesota’s annual dairy princess contest a recognizable part of the state’s culture going back 60 years.

She says Princess Kay needs to have a passion for the dairy industry.

“When we look across the 65 county dairy princesses that gathered in St. Cloud over the weekend, the first thing that everyone would notice is that there is a huge share of them that have a great passion for the dairy industry.”

Newell says contestants need to want to get out and talk to people about what dairy farmers do and what dairy does as far as nutrition.

She tells Brownfield there is diversity in this year’s finalists.

“They come all the way from up in Roseau County in the northwest corn (of the state) for the first time in more than 15 years.  And they go all the way down to Austin.  So they really stretch all of Minnesota in terms of where they come from.”

The milk from the farms the 12 candidates come from is shipped to nine different milk processors, which Newell calls a reflection of the type of diverse dairy industry Minnesota possesses.

The next Princess Kay of the Milky Way will be announced August 26th, the night before the opening day of the Minnesota State Fair.
