Legislation to repeal COOL is introduced

meat case

The chair of the House Agriculture Committee has introduced legislation to repeal Country of Origin Labeling.  Chairman Mike Conaway says he was joined by 61 colleagues in introducing HR 2393to repeal COOL for beef, pork and chicken. The Texas Republican says with the WTO ruling against the COOL law on Monday, “retaliation by Canada and Mexico will soon become a reality.”  He says Congress must act quickly to prevent the irreparable damages of retaliation, both to the U.S. economy and the trade relationships with Canada and Mexico.

The Chairman says the Ag Committee will consider the legislation Wednesday morning.

Ag Committee ranking member Colin Peterson says he is opposed to repealing the rule and would rather explore what can be done to make it WTO-compliant.
