Excessive rains ahead for the Nation’s mid-section

During the next several days, a frenetic weather pattern will continue to ease or eliminate drought across the nation’s mid-section. Five-day rainfall totals could reach 2 to 6 inches or more across the southern half of the Plains. Totals of 1 to 2 inches can be expected in a much broader area, stretching westward to the Sierra Nevada and the northern Intermountain West. In contrast, mostly dry weather will prevail through week’s end across the nation’s northern tier. During the ongoing spell of stormy weather, near- to below-normal temperatures will dominate the U.S. In the north-central U.S., the threat of frost will persist through mid-week.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for below-normal temperatures across much of the southwestern and central U.S., while warmer-than-normal weather can be expected along the Gulf Coast and in the East and Northwest. Meanwhile, above-normal rainfall nearly nationwide will contrast with drier-than-normal conditions in the northern-most U.S., along the western half of the Canadian border.
