DuPont Pioneer agronomist on crop progress in SE Minnesota

Planting corn in Wisconsin

Corn emergence in Minnesota improved to 72 percent last week and an agronomist with DuPont Pioneer says he’s not too concerned about the recent stretch of cool weather affecting the crop.

Josh Shofner covers the southeastern part of the state and tells Brownfield he is concerned about soybeans.

“Soybeans, anytime you get cooler and wet, there are going to be diseases that are favored in that.  So we’ll have to look out for early season diseases.  But still, even though we’ve been cooler, we’re not sitting extremely saturated compared to the last couple years.  In some cases we’ll be back in the field today to finish up some soybeans.”

Soybean planting advanced to 79 percent complete as of Sunday according to USDA’s latest crop progress report.

Shofner says a lot of beans are starting to emerge this week.

“Some cases leaves just popping out, some cases I think we’ll see some first unifoliates and trifoliates coming out this week.  You can row beans pretty good now.”

He suggests farmers stay proactive in scouting their crops as planting draws to a close.
