Wisconsin launches “Food Armor” accreditation program

The Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA) has certified its first “Food Armor Accredited Veterinarian.”  Dr. Glen Johnson of Reedsburg is the first to complete the training program designed to help livestock farms establish a Hazards Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) plan for proper medication use on the farm.  Dr. Katie MrDutt is with WVMA, she says it is actually part of a joint effort with the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin.  Veterinarians like Johnson learn how to work with a farm to create a HACCP plan.  Johnson worked with Cattail Dairy Farm which also became accredited in the process.  Other veterinarians are in the process of certification.

Given the constant changes in protocols and procedures in the use of medications in livestock, accredited farms must renew their certification every year plus third-party verification will be used to ensure the integrity of the program.
