More rain on the southern Plains

Across the Corn Belt, frost advisories were in effect early Wednesday across much of Wisconsin, where 9% of the corn had emerged by May 10 and Wednesday morning’s temperatures locally fell below 32°. Elsewhere in the Midwest, cool, dry weather favors fieldwork but is slowing summer crop emergence and development.

On the Plains, the latest round of significant rainfall is spreading northward across Oklahoma and Texas. Lowland flooding is already occurring in parts of Texas, southeastern New Mexico, and southern and eastern Oklahoma, with more flood-related issues expected to develop or intensify today. Meanwhile, temperatures are starting to rebound across the northern Plains, although a few rain showers linger in North Dakota.

In the South, locally heavy showers are confined to areas west of the Mississippi River. Flooding remains a threat in much of Texas due to rain falling on already saturated soils. Farther east, mild, mostly dry weather continues to promote Southeastern fieldwork.

In the West, dry weather prevails in California and the Desert Southwest, although cool conditions are reducing irrigation demands. Meanwhile, wet weather is occurring in the southern Rockies and the interior Northwest. In the latter region, rain is easing stress on rangeland, pastures, and winter wheat.
