Vilsack and G-20 on food security priorities
U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says he’s pleased with the goals agreed upon with other Ag Ministers at the G-20 meeting in Turkey meant to strengthen food security throughout the world. One of the top priorities, the ag leaders agree, is reducing food waste.
In the U.S. and other developed countries, Vilsack says the problem is the foods that consumers throw away. In developing countries, the problem is “inefficient storage of foods and ingredients before they reach consumers.” Vilsack says there needs to be investment at all stages of food value chains.
The other major priority, Vilsack says,“is the important role that science and innovation play in increasing crop production and enhancing knowledge sharing.”
The G-20 Agriculture Ministers are calling for greater cooperation and exchange of information among G-20 members; continued open, rules-based trade; and, non-tariff barriers in helping grow economies and food security in the face of climate change.
