Weather

An active weather pattern continues

An active weather pattern will continue into next week, with strong to locally severe thunderstorms expected through Saturday across the central and southern Plains. By May 10-11, the threat of severe weather will shift into the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys. Five-day rainfall totals could reach 2 to 8 inches in southern and eastern Texas, while 1- to 3-inch totals can be expected from the southeastern Plains into the Great Lakes region. Significant rain (locally 2 to 4 inches) will also soak eastern Wyoming and western sections of Nebraska and South Dakota. In the rain’s wake, freezes may occur on May 11 as far south as the central High Plains. Elsewhere, Subtropical Storm Ana will produce heavy rain in the southern Mid-Atlantic region, with landfall expected during the weekend.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for near- to below-normal temperatures nationwide, except for warmer-than-normal weather in the southern Atlantic States and from the Pacific Northwest to the northern High Plains. Meanwhile, near- to above-normal rainfall across the majority of the U.S. will contrast with drier-than-normal conditions in the Midwest and Northeast.
