HPAI prompts Jennie-O layoffs

The first mass layoffs tied to avian influenza will take place later this month.

Hormel Foods unit Jennie-O Turkey Store says H5N2 has reduced the number of turkeys available for processing and it will temporarily lay off 233 workers at its Faribault, Minnesota processing facility.  Jennie-O says the lack of birds forced the facility to move to a single processing shift.

A statement from the company says the layoffs are temporary and it intends to bring employees back when bird numbers return to normal levels.

The layoffs will take effect May 26.
