EQIP funding helping WLEB

SteveShine

For more than a decade, the Western Lake Erie Basin Partnership has been working to identify environmental risks and potential solutions in the basin.

Steve Shine with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says the partnership was able to secure $45.7 million in funding from both USDA and partners to improve farming practices in the region.  He says farmers will be able to apply this summer for assistance with NRCS through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program.

“The short list of priority practices for us are cover crops, nutrient management, conservation tillage, drainage water management and variable rate technology for nutrient application.”

For every practiced implemented, Shine says they will be measuring a before and anticipated after effect of reducing runoff.  He says USDA and local conservation districts are planning field days to highlight practices farmers can implement.
