“Unbelievable” planting progress in Wisconsin

Planting corn in Wisconsin

As of Sunday, 42 percent of the Badger State’s corn crop was in the ground, a 37-point increase in one week.  This is 24 points ahead of the five-year average and second-only to 2010 for the amount planted by May 3rd.

Michael Weiss, technical agronomist with Dekalb/Asgrow says many farmers have finished corn planting and a lot of soybeans have been planted as well.  Weiss says it is “unbelievable how much corn we can put in with today’s machinery.”  He does not expect much trouble with black cutworm or other insect pests given the dry planting conditions.

He is concerned about the alfalfa crop from Central Wisconsin over to the Appleton area.  There appears to have been a lot of heaving in the heavier soils in those areas.  Weiss thinks some may choose to take whatever they get for first crop then replace it.
