The Minnesota Board of Animal Health reported two new presumptive positive cases of avian influenza in Kandiyohi County turkey flocks Tuesday.

Steve Olson, executive director of the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association, tells Brownfield a presumptive positive detection begins when a grower notices increased mortality in the flock.

“When they get that first indication, they are pulling samples (using) tracheal swabs.  They send them in to the Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Lab at the University of Minnesota.  There they run a couple of tests: one specifically for H5 and then a more thorough test.”

If the test comes back with signs of the H5N2 strain, a presumptive positive detection is issued to alert other growers in the area to be on heightened alert.

The official testing is done at USDA’s National Veterinary Services Lab in Ames, Iowa.

With the latest detections, Kandiyohi now has 31 of the state’s 82 total cases.
