South Dakota corn planting half done

Warm temperatures and minimal precipitation allowed corn planting to progress to 51 percent complete, ahead of last year and the five-year average of 23.  It’s 1 percent emerged.  Soybeans are 6 percent planted, ahead of last year and the average.

Spring wheat is 92 percent planted, well ahead of 57 last year and 60 average. Winter wheat is not so hot – only 20 good and none of it is excellent. Oats and barley both are 92 percent planted, well ahead of last year and the average. Sorghum is only 1 percent planted.  Topsoil moisture supplies are mostly short to very short.  Only 26 percent adequate, and there’s no surplus topsoil moisture.

Pasture and range conditions were rated 9 percent very poor, 24 poor, 42 fair, and 23 good.

Stock water supplies are 58 adequate to surplus.
