Planting off to a slow start – and that’s okay

Hadley
USDA’s latest weekly crop and weather report showed farmers in Indiana made significant planting progress last week.

However, that is not the case for Roger Hadley who farms in eastern Allen County (northeast Indiana).  “I’d like to be further along on corn planting and soybean planting at this stage,” he says.  “But we haven’t had one full day to plant corn yet.  We got the planter in the field on Saturday evening just to check the technology and then I did plant Sunday afternoon for a while – which was really a good dry day.”

While Hadley says he’d like to be further along – he isn’t worried.  “It doesn’t pay to worry,” he says.  “If you remember back to last year – we didn’t get start planting until around the 5th of May.  And it was a horrible crop if you remember (Hadley laughs).”

If Mother Nature cooperates – Hadley says he just needs a few days to get the corn crop planted.
