One-third of Iowa’s layers affected by avian flu
On Monday, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship reported four more probable cases of the highly pathogenic avian influenza on commercial poultry farms in the state. Those cases involve three turkey farms and one commercial laying operation with an estimated 2.8 million birds. That means nearly one-third of Iowa’s layers have been affected by the virus.
Randy Olson, executive director of the Iowa Poultry Association and Iowa Egg Council, talks about the impact the virus is having on the industry, both short-term and long-term.
